How to Expertly Pack Your Personal Item

On most flights passengers are allowed one carry on item and one personal item on the flight, of course rules might change depending ticket class and airline.  Are you making the most of your personal item? Inside my personal item is a purse within a purse, within a purse within a... ok just kidding!  But I have adopted a sort of Russian Nesting Doll approach to personal item packing.

I usually carry a large tote as my personal item.  This tote will be my main day purse.  For the trip it's large enough to keep anything I'll need to throw in my bag for daily excursions. For travel, everything, including a book, a magazine and sometimes a flat iron and toiletries if I can't fit them into my carry-on.  A must have in this bag: Clorox wipes because planes are gross, your seat is gross, your tray table is gross--you get the picture. Pro-tip: wiping down my seat before every flight has kept me from getting sick on a lot of flights! Here are a few brands I love for an over-sized tote bag: Everlane, Cuyana, Mark and Graham.

I like to be very well organized in my tote, within this bag I like smaller pouches that organize each category of items in my bag.  Chargers and electronics go in one pouch; makeup, Kleenex and personal items in another pouch etc.  That way, when you’re on your trip you know you can just grab the specific pouch and throw it in your day bag. The best tip I’ve learned is making some, or all of these pouches purses themselves!

Within my large tote, my iPad, paper, pen and work tools all go in a large leather clutch that doubles as a going out clutch on the trip.  For travel, it's the perfect size for giving extra padding to protect my technical supplies and organize any accessories. For the trip, it's the perfect size and material to use a fold over clutch for any night outing or fancier occasion. A must have in this bag: back up batteries, flights are long and batteries die! Here are a few great tech bags that can double as large clutches: Leatherology, Cuyana, Mark and Graham.

Within my last bag I keep my phone, wallet, passport and any information I will need going to the air port, through security and after I land, in a crossbody. I actually like to wear this crossbody through the airport.  It just makes grabbing the essentials so much easier and quicker.  Then when I’m about to board, I place my tiny crossbody back inside of my tote to avoid any gate attendants having to tell me that I’m not allowed to have more than two items. Besides the obvious identification etc., must have in this bag: cash and a pen! You never know who you're going to have to tip if you're in a hurry so a little cash is just convenient to have. And the pen is especially handy for international travel. When you're handed your arrival card and it's time to fill out information it's always nice to be the one WITH the pen, instead of the one looking around for a pen.

While you're traveling you'll be able to keep all your personal information close by and while on your trip this will be the perfect bag to through on for a day of site-seeing. Here are a few cute cross body bags: Cuyana, Mark and Graham, Prada.

This purse technique will help you get through your travels efficiently and organized!
