You’re not supposed to buy new items for a trip...
I don’t think I know a single person that has ever adhered to here rule! You’re supposed to take tried and true items from your closet versus new items you’ve never worn before. Honestly, shopping for a little something new makes the trip just that much more special. Weather it’s retail therapy to ease the stress of planning a trip or adding a cherry on top to the excitement of a vacation, a little something new is always a fun addition to packing.
However, it’s not always best to fill your suitcase with brand new items. So, when is there more leeway to buy more new items versus less? If I know my exact itinerary, I’m more likely to purchase a new item or two. For example, if I’m going on a business trip with an itinerary that I’ve experienced before I feel comfortable getting a new top or outfit for this trip. If I’m going on a vacation where I don’t quite know the itinerary or if the schedule requires more adventure then I will probably take tried and true items.
If I am planning a trip that requires a lot of walking or hiking, I might not want to break in a pair of sneakers or walking shoes while on a trip. I’ll stick with a pair of shoes that I know are comfortable. But if I’m going to dinner at a resort and I want to buy a new dress, then I have no worries. A dress, appropriate for the weather for a resort is an easy buy because there are few things that can go wrong, hopefully when you try it on you will know if you like it or if it is uncomfortable but if it ends up being a little more uncomfortable than previously anticipated, at least you’ll be able to make it through dinner—which is a lot better than trying to make it through an entire day hiking in uncomfortable shoes.
It happens, we've all purchased things for a trip and it has either worked out or it hasn’t and then hopefully we’ve learned from the experience (and kept the receipts!). You never know, there might be a time when you take a once in a lifetime trip to Antarctica and you need to buy several cold weather pieces that you’ve never needed before, obviously purchase new items! Just remember that travel rules are just guidelines and do what makes you happy and comfortable on a trip! It’s your trip!
